What is an allele apex?

An allele is one of the versions of a gene that exists in a population. For example, there are different alleles that code for eye color or blood type. Each individual has two copies of each gene (one from each parent), and they may have the same or different alleles for each gene.

The term "apex allele" is not commonly used in genetics. However, "apex predator" refers to the top predator in a particular ecosystem, and the concept of an "apex allele" could refer to a gene variant that confers a selective advantage in a particular environment. This allele would be the most efficient or effective variant among all individuals in the population, much like an apex predator is the most successful predator in a given ecosystem.
